A horticulturist at Kew Gardens in London has solved the problem of growing a rare species of African waterlily. The 'thermal' lily (Nymphaea thermarum) is believed to be the smallest waterlily in the world, with pads that can be as little as 1 cm in diameter.
Thought to grow in just one just one location in Mashyuza, Rwanda, this 'thermal' lily (Nymphaea thermarum), is so named because it grows in freshwater hot springs. However, it disappeared from this site about two years ago due to over-exploitation of the hot spring that fed its fragile habitat.
A few specimens had been taken to Bonn Botanic Gardens in Germany soon after its discovery and though they survived for more than 10-years, they proved extremely difficult to propagate.
As a result of a conservation plant exchange between Bonn and Kew, a handful of seeds and seedlings reached Kew in July 2009. It was at this point that the horticulturist Carlos Magdalena, who has a track record in cultivating the rarest and most difficult plants, took on the challenge of learning the secrets of successfully propagating Nymphaea thermarum.
Unlike all other known waterlily species that grow submerged in the deep waters of lakes, rivers or marshes Nymphaea thermarum grows in the damp conditions at the edge of thermal hot springs. For successful growth it was necessary to duplicate these conditions in the laboratory. Leaving aside the technicalities, it was discovered that placing seeds and seedlings into pots of loam within small containers filled with water, and keeping the water at the same level as the surface of the compost, at a temperature of 25 °C the plants flowered for the first time.
It is hoped that within a few years these plants will be available commercially and this will enable you to have a waterlily of manageable proportions in your conservatory for the first time.
This is an important development for conservatory owners, because without the waterlily conservatories may never have become popular in the first place.
In the 19th century it was the race to propagate the Amazon waterlily (Victoria amazonica) that lead to the building of the Great Conservatory at Chatsworth House, a huge cast-iron heated glasshouse, at the time the largest glass building in the world. It cost over £30,000 to build and was heated by eight boilers using seven miles of iron pipe.
The designer of the Chatsworth Conservatory, Sir Joseph Paxton succeeded in making Victoria amazonica flower in England for the first time and even Queen Victoria visited it. It was Paxton's experience in building the conservatory that lead him to design what became known as the Crystal Palace for the Great Exhibition of 1851 and as a result, the Victorian love affair with the conservatory began.
Now over 150-years later there's a waterlily that can be grown even in the smallest conservatories.
