Introduction
It is very difficult to play the best strategy against a wide variety of opponents at the poker table. The aim is play reasonably well against all opponents - a generic optimal strategy, when you fire 1, 2 or 3 barrels on the flop, turn or river respectively.
You bet a large number of hands on the flop, less on the turn and the fewest on the river as your opponents have a wide range on the flop but it narrows and strengthens on the turn and the river.
The types of hands to bet on each street are as follows:
* Flop - Bet strong, weak and draw hands for balance
* Turn - Bet good hands and semi bluff draw hands (a polarized range); check medium or terrible hands and some huge hands or draws for balance
* River - Bet strong hands or complete air (a polarized range) and check the rest
This strategy forces opponents to call your value bets because they are not sure if you are bluffing and give up on pots with marginal hands due to the level of aggression.
It is important to bluff the turn and river often enough to maintain a polarized range and prevent opponents floating 1 or 2 streets in position, hoping you will give up on the turn or river.
The Key Guidelines
There are a number of general rules to follow in the barreling process:
The C-bet % on the flop
1. 100% in HU pots
2. 70 - 80% v 2 opponents
3. 50 - 60% v 3 players
The C-bet size on the flop
1. Dry flops........................1/2 pot
2. 3 bet pre flop pots...........1/2 pot
3. Wet flops........................Pot bet
Back off against strong or tricky players who:
1. Try to trap you by calling with strong hands
2. C/R the flop a lot
3. Float or raise IP on the flop/turn
Take the following action against these strong or tricky players
1. Check over 50% on the flop (or the turn if the flop c-bet is called) when OOP or when the board connects with your opponent's range
2. Follow part a with good AND bad hands for balance
3. Bluff re-raise IP on dry or semi-coordinated boards
4. C/R OOP on dry or semi-coordinated boards
The last measure should be applied sparingly below NL100 as trapping is rare.
