Why do Americans assume that all Spaniards look like Penelope Cruz or Antonio Banderas?
Whenever I tell Americans that I am from Spain, they look surprised and say that I do not look Spanish. When I ask them why they think that I do not look Spanish, they say well because you are not dark or exotic like Antonio Banderas or Penelope Cruz.
This amuses me because that look is also quite rare in Spain too and is not the norm. We are not all Latin Lover looking. Some of us look very "plain" like any German or a British person. The Latin look of Spain only constitutes a small percentage of the population.
That would be like me telling Americans that they do not look American because they don't look like Johnny Depp or look like Native Americans. This is something I just do understand about Americans. Do they think that only Northern Europeans are caucasians? Do they just not know that Spaniards are white too?
