Located in the center of Midtown Manhattan, The Rockefeller Center is a complex of nineteen commercial buildings spanning 22 acres and located between Fifth Avenue and Sixth Avenue. Best known for its 'Christmas Tree', 'Top of the Rock' observation deck and 'Radio City Music Hall', it is a great New York destination for all visitors any time of the year.
Originally known as the Radio City, this complex came into being during the Great Depression. The location, originally intended for the construction of the Metropolitan Opera, used to be a red-light district owned by Columbia University.
The RCA building was the first to be completed and it served as the headquarters of the Radio Corporation of America. This 70 storey tower is the tallest in the complex and it served as the basis for all other Rockefeller structures. The RCA building is now popularly known as the 30 Rockefeller Plaza or GE Building.
As the building was designed during the Depression, to ensure that all floor space is occupied several measures were taken; each office designed to make the most of the natural light, fast elevators, air-conditioning and underground connections to the subway managed to lure in customers.
The best part of the Rockefeller Center is the observation deck on the top floor of the GE Building. The newly renovated art-deco style deck, popularly known as the 'Top of the Rock', offers panoramic view of the Central Park and the Empire State Building. This roof terrace has been around since the opening of the building in 1933 and currently the top three levels are open to the public. Easily accessible through the entrance at the West 50th Street, an elevator leads the public first to the completely covered 67th floor, then to the observation deck on the 69th, which sports a windshield, and then to the 70th floor, which is completely open.
The fourteen buildings of the Rockefeller Center surround the Lower Plaza. Popular for its skating rinks, the Lower Plaza connects to the Fifth Avenue via a pedestrian street providing easy access to its visitors. Known as the Channel Gardens, this decorated street offers views of the sculpture of Prometheus and the GE Building. The Radio City Music Hall was, at the time of construction, the largest indoor theatre in the world boasting a capacity of around 6000.
The Rockefeller Center, famously known as a 'City in the City', boast exceptional designing styles. All buildings of the center share an 'Art Deco' style and an underground concourse is used to connect each other. The complex is well incorporated in to the New York City and is a National Historic Landmark.
Other attractions in the area include the St Patrick's Cathedral, the Museum of Modern Art, the Times Square and the Bryant Park.
