Why collect soundtrack records? There are many reasons people have a passion for film soundtracks, often the collector is interested in individual composers such as John Barry, Ennio Morricone, Roy Budd, Gerry Goldsmith and so on. Prolific composers such as these off hundreds of titles for the ardent collector. As well as the well known contributors there thousands of more obscure composers who's records can be found in record fairs and vinyl shops through out the country.
Film genres offer another fascinating area of collectability. By far the most popular genres are Horror and Science fiction with cult fields such as Erotica and Blaxsploitation offering hundreds of intriguing titles for anyone prepared to dig deep in vinyl boxes or on the internet. All genres have classics in their field which are highly sort after by their devotees. As an avid follower of Film Noir, albums such as Miles Davis's Ascenseur Pour L'echafaud on original French 10 inch are high on my wants list, with the smouldering jazz trumpet perfectly embodying the feel of the often dark and moody genre.
Very often collectors have an interest in a particular actor or film director. Icon figures of Cinema such as Marlon Brando, James Dean, Bruce Lee, John Wayne or more recently Johnny Depp attract both collectors of film memorabilia and vinyl.
The most common Film Soundtrack by far is the Sound Of Music starring Julie Andrews followed closely by the King And I and South Pacific. At the opposite end of the spectrum there is rare and sort after items which turn up in very low numbers. One of the rarest UK soundtracks is "Alfred the Great" conducted by Ray Leppard and starring David Hemmings. Probably the two most collectable Original Soundtracks from abroad are the US copy of the "Caine Mutiny" original RCA issues of this selling for thousands of pounds. Another very sort after item is the Japanese only original of the cult Michael Caine classic "Get Carter". This record was never originally released in the UK with Emi Toshiba Japanese issue fetching around £500.
Original Soundtrack records offer a broad diversity of music for people who collect in all genres, whether your taste is Pop, Jazz, Soul, Classical, rock, Reggae and many others there is something for everybody.
For many it is not the music which makes these items desirable but the sometimes spectacular artwork which is designed specifically for the album or colourful a copy of the promotional imagery. To own an original vinyl record with original artwork is like owning a first edition print and is an item to be treasured by its proud owner.
