I've been listening to Megadeth since I was a kid and they really left a mark on me. The band's been releasing stuff since the 80's creating a long career with various periods and several releases. Right now I'd like to share with you my list of the albums that I consider to be their best ever and that have their most known Megadeth hits, or "Megahits". Here's the countdown:
6. Criptic Writings
Even if "Cryptic Writings" is a little unbalanced as a whole and is not an album I'd like to listen from start to finish, it has some of the songs that became classic on Megadeth's live performance ("Trust" and "She-wolf" anyone?). "Almost Honest" was very popular at the time, but I never liked it that much. This record showed a more commercial approach but it has songs that are pure Megadeth.
5. Endgame
They blew me away with this one. Mustaine found the right man on lead guitar duties when he hired Chris Broderick. This album is worth listening to just for his guitar playing. Add to that great songs like "Headcrusher" and my favorite "How The Story Ends" and you have Megadeth in top form.
4. Youthanasia
This album is a bit underrated in my opinion. It has great songs, great production and the artwork and photos are outstanding. "Reckoning Day" and "Train Of Consequences" are great songs and "A Tout Le Monde" proved to be the Mega-ballad that stands the test of time. Marty Friedman shows his great skills as a guitar virtuoso on the solo on "Killing Road".
3. Countdown to Extinction
When I got this record as a kid I used to listen to it every day after coming home from school. "Symphony Of Destruction" hit me right away and it's still mandatory on Megadeth's set. Dave Mustaine's comical voice on "Sweating Bullets" didn't do much for me, though. I still listen to this record from start to finish but tend to favor the less known songs. The production is polished and is ideal if you want to get into Megadeth.
2. Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?
A classic Megadeth record, hands down. The title song is an all time crowd favorite along with excellent songs that are raw and heavy ("Wake Up Dead", "The Conjuring", "Devil's Island"). This is the first record that showcased more evidently Megadeth's technical approach and songwriting skills.
1. Rust In Peace
This album is amazing. Great UNPREDICTABLE songs with excellent guitar solos and riffs. A great listen to start to finish and a document that hails Megadeth as one of the most influential metal bands. No filler songs, great guitar solos (I read somewhere that Marty's solo on "Tornado Of Souls" blew away Dave Mustaine when he first heard it). This album was the first with their most famous lineup (Dave Mustaine / Marty Friedman / David Ellefson / Nick Menza) and their best one in my opinion. "Holy Wars", "Hangar 18", "Five Magics", "Tornado Of Souls". I rest my case.
Even if you disagree with me on the list, there's no question about Megadeth 's influence on rock and metal music. Their mark is unquestionable.
