Keeping good records is not just for businesses. Good record-keeping is essential to your home running smoothly. I've come to learn over the years as strange as it sounds you should run your home like a business otherwise you are left with disorder, unpaid bills, and lost paperwork.
A good filing system is the base of keeping good records however, if you don't put documents into your filing system you are getting no where fast. While it may seem like a mystery to some, it is not as hard as it sounds and with just a wee bit of preparation and some follow through you too can be organized.
We collect a lot of paper and although you can get paperless billing for many of your utility or credit card statements you still acquire receipts and other important documents that need safekeeping.
To get started first you need a filing cabinet or bankers box, hanging files and plain folders (you can skip the manila folders and just use the hanging files that is entirely up to you). Hanging folders are good for categories if you choose to sort your files in this fashion.
You can buy filing cabinets and folders in letter or legal size, for your home letter size is more common and usually less expensive. For under $75.00 dollars or less depending on how fancy a filing cabinet you go with you could get started.
Label your folders either using a labeler, a computer, or doing it the old fashioned way by hand. Make folders for your different bills and documents here are some examples...
Credit card bills - a folder for each
Car payments
Automobiles, Boats, Motorcycles
Banks, Investment Accounts
Utility bills - each or you can combine then
Medical file - one for each member of the family
Insurances
You should also make files for your warranties and paper work for your TV, stereo, and other appliances this way you always know where your manual is if you need to refer to it and where your receipt is if you need to return it.
You have children you want to make a school file for their report cards, extra photos, a small collection of writings or pictures they drew that school year. If you have pets keep their vet records too.
Once you have your folders labeled if you decide to go with categories file your like items together, you can always separate them later if you find you do not like it that way. Now start sorting through that mountain of papers and start filing.
Maintenance may become an issue however, if you can set aside 15 minutes once a week you should be able to keep up with it easily. Get yourself a nice box or file organizer to keep your papers organized in one spot and on the big day file away.
