However propane also trades on the CME Globex platform from 6:00 PM until 5:15 PM Sunday through Friday. There is a 45-minute break each day between 5:15PM (current trade date) and 6:00 PM (next trade date), New York Time.
What is the contract size?
The contract size is 42,000 gallons (1,000 barrels)
What is the tick value?
Each $.01 move on the contract equals $4.20.
Why trade propane?
Propane trading is used by people to hedge their energy risks. Perhaps you are a farm co-op looking to mange your energy costs this year. If you believe prices will be heading up due to possible disruptions in crude oil, you would purchase a propane contract to help guard yourself from a sudden price spike.
How can I trade propane?
You would need to find a futures or commodity broker to help you set up and account to trade propane futures. Remember, future trading is risky.
How does knowing the price of propane help me?
The benefit to the consumer is that the New York Mercantile Exchange continually shows the public the price the propane trades. You can use this price to determine if your propane dealer is charging you a fair price for your propane. You can pick up any financial newspaper or go on the web to find that day's final price.
