Too many people, there are only a certain group of musical genres, like different variants of rock or pop, but one that a lot of listeners may miss out on is a style called Dubstep. Those who are more familiar with electronic music and the dance scene may be quicker to recognise it though, as it has often been described as reverberant and bass driven.
Compared to other musical styles, Dubstep is really quite new, only having emerged from the late 1990s electronic scene. The genre actually earned its name in 2002 several years after its initial rise, this is because it began to differentiate itself more from other similar styles and became a truly unique new genre.
Dubstep samples often incorporate triplets with a shuffled sound, and have moved from being heavily percussion based in its beginning stages to using more loose beats. The overall popularity growth of Dubstep from its start until now has to be credited largely to club Forward in London. DJ samples began to be showcased there in the early 2000s, giving a wider platform for this new style to take root and grow.
The popular London club was not the only well-known supporter of this new type of beat, with the help of DJ John Peel playing Dubstep samples on his show on BBC Radio 1 in 2003, the music started to grow its branches out from the local scenes that it had previously been confined to. By late 2005 there were a good number of new sites on the web devoted to Dubstep, which further propelled it into the spotlight.
One very interesting way that Dubstep has managed to creep into the mainstream, has been mixing Dubstep DJ samples with other already established songs, thus introducing those demographics of other songs to this new music. Listeners can then discover the genre more easily by association.
With Dubstep hitting the charts more and more often, it is no doubt that this modern style will continue to grow exponentially and further attract an audience that is far bigger than many imagined in its early days.
