A 16 year old kid brazenly stole my sandwhich from my tray as I was walking away from the checkout counter at Roy Rogers. The sandwich cost me about $4.
I wasn't about to get in a fight with the teenager, or his friends, over my sandwich. Should I have tried to? Is it worth fighting for? Should I have called the police? Would the police do anything about a stolen Sandwich?
I would prefer responses from people who've had personal experience in a similar situation (where you were wronged in a way that goes beyond everyday rudeness, yet is not grave enough to fight and/or file a police report about).
As far as what occured after the theft, the kid didn't even bother to run away with my sandwich. Instead he and his friends sat down, and began eating. Him, with my sandwich.
Oh my goodness... my husband and I saw this same situation happen at a little beachfront Mexican restaurant we live near!
We were eating lunch at the outside patio tables and a group of 4 teenage guys walked right by and snatched a taquito off of the table next to us... the family was even sitting at the table -- a husband and wife (in their 40's) with their teenage son & daughter. The punks continued to walk across the parking lot laughing. The dad got up & walked over to them. The dad wasn't a very big guy... fairly muscular, but only 5'6" maybe. Immediately, his son & my husband ran over there in case anything started. The 4 teenagers were all around 6 foot.
Sure enough, the kid who had grabbed the taquito started yelling, cussing and acting hard. They went back & forth yelling, then the punk called the man's wife or daughter a vulgar name and shoved him... then it happened!!! I have never seen anyone move so fast... in one movement the man took that punk off his feet, slammed his head into a trunk bumper, did some sort of martial arts kick that threw him 10 feet back and knocked him out. When one of the friends tried to step in, the guy's son did the same thing (minus the head to the bumper move).
Imagine someone taking food off Chuck Norris' plate without his permission... that's how this was. It was awesome!!! Not that I'm for violence, but sometimes people get their just dues.
However, unless you are a black belt, I wouldn't recommend going after someone over food. There are a lot of crazy people out there. The guy that took your sandwich could be on drugs or have a weapon. He obviously has no respect for other people.
Guaranteed, if that man & his son hadn't known self-defense, they would have probably gotten their butts kicked.
If I were in your situation, I would have told the employee at the check out counter what just happened and pointed the guy out that stole your sandwich. You should have requested a manager confront him and take the necessary action... either calling the police if that's an official crime, or at the least throwing the guy out of the restaurant. If he refused to leave then they could have definitely called the police. Also, they should have given you a new sandwich or a refund (or both).
