Do you know how ragtime got its name? This music was first heard in the bordellos of New Orleans in the early 1900s. Back before recorded music, such establishments often employed a piano player to entertain the customers. On any given night, a few of the sporting ladies would be in a condition that prevented them from taking the gentleman visitors upstairs. During these days, the ladies drank and danced with the gentlemen, tried to get them "in the mood" for the services of their less indisposed collegues. Hence, the style of music to which they danced is "Ragtime"
