OK, I'm not upset at rappers. Just let me clear that up at the start. But what gets to me is how almost anyone thinks they can just come up with the idea and then expect a record deal. If you are looking to make your own rap music and make some real money from it then you need to do it in the right way.
What I am talking about is your branding. Who are you and what makes you unique. This will help to create your brand. If there is nothing special about you then you had better change that here and now to make it in the music business. In all areas of rock, pop and soul music the major artists have a clearly defined image and unique angle. So when a company like Sony or Jive records sees a new act they have something to look at that makes them different from all the other hopefuls they have seen that week.
I think the best way to learn about branding is to look at bands who have come before you, or for that matter single artists.
Take the Sex Pistols as an example. They had a brand based on Anarchy. They did not conform and were completely against the governments and music establishment. It was so far over the top that they got noticed and quickly got a major record deal. This is for a band who openly admitted that they were rubbish and couldn't even play their instruments.
Look at Bob Geldorf. What is his unique position. He is a scruffy looking, foul mouthed, Irish guy. That's his brand. You can see it as soon as I say it. Who would have thought that he would become a friend to world leaders and a huge influence with the Band Aid charity work he pioneered.
That is branding.
But branding is more than just a look. It says "This is me and this is how I do things" The trick is to do this in such a way that it comes over as a positive thing and not plain stupid and arrogant.
One side issue to branding is to have a gimmick that is off the wall in some way. Sparks had 2 brothers in the band. One jumped all over the stage and the equipment while the other one was motionless on stage and did a strange glare thing with his eyes. Where they got the idea from I can't tell you but it gave them a great stage act which was part of their brand.
So if you are really a rapper looking for a record deal with Def Jam Records or Sho Nuff Records you had better be sure that you have something eye catching and different in your brand.
