Soul Brothers
Weapons are good or bad depending on what they are in the hand of the person holding them and the purpose for which they are meant. Violence is a word that humanity forbids as far as possible because most time, wherever it is mentioned or its corresponding actions shown forth; it is usually not palatable.
This article is not unconnected with the series of articles that are focusing on what you have on your palms or hands. This article stems from an article already titled it can destroy your life, which is also an article written by me. There were two brothers mentioned and we are going to be discussing them here. These are two brothers who were found to be violent and made use of what they have in their hands to cause great havoc in their time.
Simeon and Levi are both Jacob's sons. They became obsessed and angry when they heard that their sister, Dinah, was defiled by an uncircumcised Shechem, son of Hamor, who raped her. They took their swords and attacked the unsuspecting city, killed every male. They went to the city and seized their flocks and herds; carried their wealth, all their wives and children. They went as far as plundering their houses. To crown it all, they killed Shechem and took Dinah from his house and left. All these were done to revenge their raped sister!
While this article is not disputing the fact that these brothers were in bitter pain concerning the evil act done against their sister; the focus however, is the act put up by these two brothers with what they have in their hands - the sword. The sword is a weapon and the way it was used in this case could be best described as being wicked, brutal, cruel, nasty, wrongful and ruthless. They used their swords that they have in their hands to kill the Canaanites and Perizzites without thinking about the repercussion of such act which might result to war and the house of Jacob being wiped out or utterly destroyed!
Jacob, however, when he was about to die, called all his children together to tell them what will happen to them in later days to come. He said this about the two brothers, Simeon and Levi:
"Simeon and Levi are brothers - their swords are weapon of violence. Let me not enter their council, let me not join their assembly, for they have killed men in their anger and hamstrung oxen as they pleased. Cursed be their anger, so fierce and their fury, so cruel! I will scatter them in Jacob and disperse them in Israel". (Genesis 49: 5-7 NIV)
Though they were helping or fighting on behalf of their sister, Dinah, on the ground that the Shechemites have treated their sister like a prostitute, the fact remains that their swords are not meant to be used especially by them in that situation to kill innocent people mercilessly. The same goes this day where people entrusted with the weapons of security like guns, ammunitions, etc, see such as objects to be used to harass people and steal what belong to them. They see it as a great opportunity to exploit the weak. Watch it!
In all, we are to watch when helping so that one should not step outside one's boundary. Vengeance is of God. What is in your hand is/are not meant to cause calamity and brutality, but they are to be instruments to better the lots of the community, serve and protect humanity and for the benefit of human race. Be careful!
