Holistic medicine and alternative therapies are big news. Even places like Duke Integrative Medicine are getting on the holistic soul care bandwagon with offerings like yoga, acupuncture, and massage therapy. While alternative therapies are proving very popular, there is still some question about the efficacy of these new healing methods. Of course, the final say should always go to the patient, but it can be useful to have a little skepticism about new soul care therapies, particularly when there is no theory to explain how they work and no research to prove they do work.
Relaxation As Stress-Relief
In some cases, alternative therapies, like massage therapy, can be justified solely on how they make a patient feel. Stress is one of the major contributors to disease, and massage therapy is known to relieve muscle tension and stress significantly. In this respect, we don't have to believe that the muscles store the memories of past traumas, like many massage therapy practitioners believe, and that massaging them releases the trauma. We can simply base the efficacy of the treatment on the fact that it offers stress relief and determine that this is valuable soul care.
Psychological Or Spiritual Methods
What about the soul care, unlike massage therapy, that relies on more subjective methods? How do we know that someone who is doing acupuncture is really channeling chi into our meridians instead of just sticking pins into our bodies? To be sure, there is some scientific evidence that acupuncture does work, but less so when it comes to psychological methods like psychotherapy that relies on clinical anecdotal evidence. So, how to we know when something new comes into the holistic soul care market, that it is based on some sort of sound scientific principle? For instance, how do we know that using mandalas to evaluate someone's inner psyche is effective, in a scientific sense?
Understand The Theory And Research The Practice
To really evaluate an alternative therapy, you have to understand where it originates and how it is used. For the MARI, a tool that uses mandalas to evaluate a person's inner psyche, the theories are based on Jungian psychology that have a sound scientific basis and wide following. Joan Kellogg, the creator of the MARI, developed it for her Master's thesis and, as such, has undergone rigorous academic scrutiny. Finally, in application, she used it with such accuracy that she could even detect physical diseases within a patient that had manifested in their subconscious, but that the patient had been unaware of until then. It is this type of objective evidence that is required to validate any holistic soul care treatment on a scientific basis. It doesn't mean you can't use things like massage therapy to help with mental traumas, but that there is no clear-cut theory that would explain how it works. And, with any alternative treatment, they can impact individuals differently so that it might just be worth a try to see if it works for you. Just hold on to your skepticism and let the holistic care treatment convince you that it in fact does what it says.
Michele Takei,Ph.D., in collaboration with Claire Moylan, is working to explore how the MARI is used in applied psychology through scientific research, training, and transpersonal psychology methods.
