These days everybody's talking about videos as the hottest marketing game in town. It's easy to forget that audio can be extremely powerful as a marketing tool. In fact, sometimes audio will actually out-perform video on your website. Here's why:
Reason #1: In some situations, audio actually will be even more effective than video. Why? Well, I don't know about you, but I have to stop what I'm doing to watch a video. When I get a link to a video - even a 2-minute video - I might already be listening to a replay while I'm working. I might have background music playing. And now I have to stop, turn off, and tune out what I've got going.
In an ideal world we would never multitask. In real life we often do.
Reason #2: Audio lets you paint powerful word pictures.
Many years ago, comedian Stan Freberg illustrated the power of radio (i.e., pure audio) by asking listeners to imagine this scene: Lake Michigan is drained and filled with hot chocolate and whipped cream. The Royal Canadian Air Force drops a cherry on top while 10,000 "cheering extras" add excitement.
That's a lot to ask of a simple teleseminar today, but the truth is that listeners get very involved when you write a script that calls for them to use their imagination. When they picture something in their own minds, instead of watching you provide a picture, they tend to remember your content more vividly. It's the same idea as reading versus television: books actually call for more involvement than watching the screen.
Three Ways To Market Yourself With Audio
-- Many online marketers use audio as background for a sales page. Of course some folks like their web pages served up in silence, but statistics show that we respond to a multimedia call to action.
-- Supplement your "about" page and bio. Sure, you can include a straightforward "This is who I am" recording. You can also showcase yourself with an interview. The key is to get your host to ask key strategic questions and prepare answers that demonstrate your credibility, expertise and (if applicable) warmth and empathy.
-- Add flair to your "Services" page with a demo of yourself working with a client. Record a phone conversation that you've scripted to highlight the way you deliver consulting or coaching services. Choose a topic and a ""spin" that reinforces your message.
