You're not alone. Surveys have found that over half of people will suffer from some form of insomnia at least once in their lives and they'll need help sleeping. The first thing you should do is see your doctor to make sure there is no underlying issue that is causing you to miss your sleep. If you've got the all clear but sleep is still not helping try these tips.
Get into a routine and follow it, every single day. This means no sleeping in or late nights that interrupt your cycles. It can seem like a great way to ruin your social life and relaxing weekends but the more you vary your sleep and wake times the more your natural rhythms will be upset. Find the best time for you to head to bed and get out and do it, every day.
Watch what you are putting into your body. Eating, drinking and smoking all affect your metabolism to varying degrees, so to get your body ready for rest completely avoid any of these for at least two hours before bed time. Alcohol may help you to fall asleep but it prevents you from entering a deep sleep, cigarettes feed an addiction but fill you with chemicals. These may be the number one cause of bad sleep.
Get your bed and bedroom set up right. Too many bedrooms are full of stimulation. This should be your bunker, your place of safety and the most relaxing room in your house. Get rid of the TV, make sure all sources of light are covered by good quality curtains, cover up the digital clock so you don't end up staring at it. Never bring work to bed. And open a window.
