While Phuket has not traditionally been known as the place to have your nuptials performed (say, as is Las Vegas), thousands of couples per year have recently decided that Phuket is the perfect place to tie that lifetime knot.
And the reason for the rise of Phuket as the marriage capital of Thailand has a lot to do with the increase in services available. For example, a couple can design a traditional Thai Buddhist ceremony, or go Chinese-style as well as Christian - or any other ceremony that can be imagined is now possible.
Many Phuket resorts will bend over backwards to meet the "engaged" needs, and they now offer steep discounts on food and lodging for those that want their blessed day hosted by a Phuket resort. A surprising number of resorts have now built a chapel area where couples can get hooked right on the ocean - as the sun rises or sun sets - you get to choose!
Professional wedding planners are now being hired or contracted by the best resorts, and these multi-lingual professionals will use their knowledge of local flora and international and local cuisines to help you design a professionally executed wedding.
Wedding dresses and tux's can be custom ordered and tailored locally, and of course the choice of fabrics is amongst the best in the world with the inclusion of internationally acclaimed Thai silk and other Thai and Indian hand-woven fabrics.
In addition to wedding, bridesmaid and flower girl dresses that can be custom designed or purchased ready-made, the selection of gold, silver, and precious stone jewellery is unrivalled worldwide, and all can be found at relatively low prices.
For those that are considering a marriage in Thailand, there are just a few considerations to keep in mind:
First, if you want your wedding to be recognized as legit back home, you will want to have the proper paperwork prepared ahead of time. All that entails is a trip to your own local embassy (best done in Bangkok as you travel to Phuket) to get an official letter stating that you and your future spouse are currently single and legally available for marriage. If divorced, you will need to provide proof of the divorce before your embassy can issue the letter.
Once that certification is signed, you need to take that to the Thailand Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bangkok, where everything needed is then translated into Thai and officially stamped and sealed.
Now you are ready to apply for a marriage license in Phuket Town, where more paperwork is completed and a license is issued that will be valid back in your home country as a legal marriage certificate. Many couples have found that the services of an agent, like Bangkok Translation Services (BTS) can help you with all the formalities (scheduling appointments, translating the ceremony, etc.)
An agent will try to handle all the paperwork for you, allowing you and your spouse to be enjoying a beach holiday all in anticipation of the perfect beach honeymoon!
