I want to start listening to Tom Waits. Which album would be a good starter album?
Which Tom Waits album would be a good album to start with? When I look for a CD, there are so many to choose from, I just don't know where to begin! Any suggestions?
His older stuff is definitely the most accessible. Albums like Small Change, Foreign Affairs, and Blue Valentine follow the blues route. Around the mid '80s, two things happened: Tom Waits got married, and then he changed his sound. Go figure. The new sound is a little out there, and he combines so many different genres that it's just impossible to describe. I love it, but it is hard to get into.
In my opinion, you should start with his older stuff like Small Change, but then buy an album like Mule Variations or even Real Gone. The difference will be blatantly obvious, and you probably won't even like it when you first hear it, but keep giving it a try and if you're like me, you'll end up loving it.
