For moderate and advanced golfers, utilizing the 'draw' and 'fade' off the tee can be very beneficial. To begin, let's briefly examine both shots, simple golf tips for hitting them, and some circumstances where it makes sense to hit these golf shots with your driver. You will be surprised at the simplicity of shaping golf shots like a pro!
First let's consider the draw, a shot that mildly curves from right to left for the right handed golfer (opposite for left handed golfers). Hitting a draw with your driver will usually provide a lower trajectory golf shot that will roll out a bit more than other shots. The technical explanation is that the driver is ever so slightly de-lofted with the toe of the driver forward. Imagine the setup for the shot like this: take your stance with your feet and shoulders aimed slightly right of the target, but keep the face of your driver pointed directly at the target. The golf swing will follow your feet and shoulders, which will start the golf ball flight out to the right. Because the 'toe in' setup, the club will be slightly closed at impact, imparting spin on the golf ball and curving the shot slightly back to the left and toward your target. The reason a draw will fly less and roll more is this mild topspin.
When should a golfer hit a draw with their driver? You want to use the 'draw' when you are facing a dogleg left and want your tee shot to follow the design of the golf hole. Another good reason for hitting a draw with your driver is that it will typically be a longer golf shot due to the added roll. If conditions are dry or fast, the draw will add significant distance to your shots with the driver. Another reason to play a draw is if there is major trouble like water or OB on the left. Hitting a draw keeps your ball moving away from the trouble and brings it back to your target. Try this golf tip: When faced with water on the left, tee up on the extreme left side of the tee box (even straddling the tee marker is ok) and try playing a draw golf shot. You will avoid the hazard more often by aiming slightly away from the water!
Now let's investigate the 'fade' golf shot, or a shot with the driver that curves slightly left to right (again, opposite for a left handed golfer). An important word here is slightly, we don't want to hit drives with the dreaded slice, or extreme left to right curve. Conversely to the draw setup, to hit a drive with a fade you need to line your feet and shoulders up left of the target. Again, keep the face of your driver pointed at the target. When you make your golf swing, the ball will start on the path of the swing (out left in this example) and curve back to the right. Consider this golf tip: Line the driver face up with a broken tee or stone on the ground between your target and the ball, then take your stance and open it up, keeping the club face pointed toward your intermediate target.
Hitting a 'fade' with your driver will produce a higher and shorter golf shot, typically landing softly and not rolling much. This golf shot should be used to frame a tee shot for a dogleg right or when you need more carry to clear a hazard or bunker. When conditions are wet and soft, you will normally get more distance from a fade since this golf shot will fly farther and roll is out of the question. Here's one more golf tip: Use the fade for distance control. For example, if there is a creek or bunker you could reach with a great shot and roll, hit a fade with your driver so you can make a full swing and stay short of the trouble since it will land softly.
