Subliminal messages in songs have been cause for concern for many as far back as the sixties. Also know as backward tracking, one type of these messages are intentionally inserted onto soundtracks.
Subliminal messages in songs are not the only media which has used these kind of messages. In the nineteen fifties subliminally recorded messages were intentionally inserted into drive in movies. These messages suggested that people should go and get some popcorn and "coke". Sales of these items immediately increased by more than fifty percent. Much controversy surrounded this occurrence. Subliminal messaging in television and movies can not be noticed, as they are less than seconds long and blend into the rest of the program.
Subliminal messages in songs can not be heard either. To put it simply, the sounds are blended into the music so that they can not be separated from the rest of the music.
Backward tracking is one of the forms of subliminal messages in songs. It is purposely inserted on to a sound track, and can not be understood with regular play. As the name suggests it can only be heard when played backwards.
Placing subliminal messages in songs can be quite helpful when used properly. By placing subliminal messages in songs quite a few self help recordings have been created. Some people have claimed to have success in decreasing stress, stopping smoking and losing weight with the use of these recordings.
Subliminal messages in songs have also created fear and apprehension in more than a few people. In the nineteen sixties it became well known that the "Beatles" had these hidden messages in their songs. One in particular suggesting that "Paul is dead".
Many recordings over the years have had claims of backward masking.. Some with very simple messages, pertaining to the artists personal beliefs or point of view. Some of these include Elvis Presley, The Captain and Tennile, Celine Dion and many more. Most of these artists messages are positive, or simply not negative.
Still others are claimed to have messages that would give any mother nightmares, and cause her to consider destroying every recording in her teenager's possession. A couple of the most well known being "Led Zeppelin's Stairway to heaven" and The Eagles "Hotel California". These and many other rock and heavy metal bands are claimed to have extremely negative, violent and satanic messages deliberately inserted into their backgrounds.
There have been quite a few studies on this topic. As far as any long term affect are concerned, the jury is still out.
This does cause one to ponder these questions. "Do I really feel what I feel? Do I really Think what I think? Or have I been somehow programmed by these subliminal messages in songs?
